Do Not Cancel Your Appointment

A person may not understand the importance of keeping a scheduled dental appointment. Cancelling a dental appointment may not seem like a big deal but if a patient does not reschedule, it can have effects on their oral health. Here at Prescott Dental Arts each patient is given time on our schedule that is dedicated to them. We know how important it is that each patient has ample time for their treatment and care. When a patient cancels their appointment, it can seriously impact their oral and overall dental health. Here are some things to consider before a patient cancels their upcoming appointment:

How Will This Impact Overall Health?

A person may not realize that cancelling a dental appointment can turn small dental issues into big dental problems. Many dental issues, like cavities or gum disease, start out small but can progress into bigger issues leading to infection or tooth loss. Cancelling a dental appointment and waiting until pain or other symptoms occurs is extremely unhealthy.

A lot of people don’t reschedule their cancelled appointment until they start experiencing symptoms. Once the symptoms occur the problem has already progressed. Regular cleaning appointments and checkups are important because they allow the dentist to examine the teeth and treat small dental issues before they become large dental problems.

When a patient cancels their cleaning and checkup or treatment appointment they run the risk of having cavities progress into root canals, broken teeth having to be extracted, or gingivitis turning into periodontal disease. The treatment that is done, before symptoms arise, will be minor and less invasive, easier on the pocketbook, and will help preserve overall oral health.

How Will This Impact My Restorations?

If a person cancels an appointment for restorations instead for dental cleaning, the consequences might be even more serious. If a person cancels an appointment for a filling on a tooth that is decayed, the tooth will continue to develop decay and may eventually require more invasive  treatment. A tooth that may have needed a small filling, if left untreated, may now need a root canal, a crown, or an extraction.

When Would I Be Able to Reschedule?

At Prescott Dental Arts we want our patients to know that we understand that some unforeseen circumstances happen that can interfere with their scheduled appointment. We also want our patients to understand the importance of rescheduling an appointment instead of canceling an appointment. At our Prescott AZ office we strive to get our patients, who have to cancel, rescheduled immediately. We always try to work with the schedule of our patients but always explain to them that it may be difficult to get another appointment close to their original appointment. Rescheduling an appointment a week or two is preferable to cancelling the appointment altogether.

Am I Concealing My Anxiety?

There are many reasons why a person may cancel an appointment. Sometimes something comes up, they suddenly get sick, or it could be a fear of the appointment. A person may not realize this as they continue to cancel their appointment simply because they dread going to the dentist. There are a hundred of different excuses that can keep a person from coming in for checkups and treatments. If dental anxiety is the real reason for cancelling appointments our team at Prescott Dental Arts can help a person overcome anxiety and get the dental care they need.
