Grinding Teeth
Grinding Teeth
Teeth grinding is a fairly common habit. Many people grind their teeth without knowing it as they sleep. This issue may go unknown to you because you may grind your teeth while you sleep. Teeth grinding is bad for your teeth and can lead to some painful symptoms. If you would like to learn about treatment with a nighttime mouth guard, please contact our Prescott office, Prescott Dental Arts, to schedule a consultation.
Problems caused by Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding can lead to any of the following problems:
- Chronic headaches
- Jaw soreness and tenderness
- Pain and soreness around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
- Cracked, broken teeth
- Worn teeth
- Loose teeth
Causes of Tooth Enamel Damage
Teeth grinding or bruxism is another cause of tooth enamel damage. Over time, the constant clenching and friction can wear down or fracture the enamel. Bruxism is often worst when you sleep — that’s when you can’t control it. Reducing stress may help. Some people wear a special mouth guard to bed.
