Chipped Teeth & Dental Repairs
Dental Repairs–Tooth Bonding
A person can chip their teeth in many different ways. Sometimes chewing ice, eating popcorn, biting fingernails, grinding, or opening objects with the teeth can cause small chips or large fractures. Leaving the teeth chipped or fractured is not a good option. If chipped teeth are not repaired they are more prone to decay or fracturing further. Fortunately, at Prescott Dental Arts we offer several different treatment options for repairing chipped or fractured teeth.
One of the services we offer at our Prescott Arizona office is tooth bonding. Tooth bonding is a popular treatment used for repairing chipped teeth. The material used for tooth bonding is a composite resin that is very natural looking and strong.
Composite can be matched with a person’s own tooth color and can blend perfectly with the surrounding teeth making the chipped area unseen. Tooth bonding is great for areas where the chip is small. If a tooth has a large fracture bonding may not be the best option. Sometimes a different treatment is needed to repair a tooth that has a larger fracture.
Repairing Chipped Teeth–Crowns & Veneers
When a patient has a big fracture or a back tooth breaks, our Prescott AZ dentist Dr. Herbert may recommend a dental crown. A dental crown may be necessary if the fracture is too big to be repaired with a filling. Dental crowns are tooth-colored and made of either porcelain or other advanced materials.
Because the dental crown is usually tooth-colored it can blend in with the surrounding teeth and look very natural. Dental crown material is made extremely strong and durable to be able to withstand constant chewing. A dental crown covers the entire tooth adding protection and support.
If the chipped area of a tooth only affects a portion of the tooth Dr. Herbert may recommend using a partial crown called an onlay or inlay. An onlay is a restoration that covers one or more cusps of a tooth. An inlay sits within the cusps of the chewing surface of the tooth. Both onlays and inlays are more conservative than crowns because less tooth structure has to be removed to place them. Both restorations are very strong and durable and if taken care of can be long-lasting.
Another restoration used to repair chipped teeth that are located in the front is porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are several thin layers of ceramic that are placed on the surface of teeth. Dr. Herbert will use an adhesive to bond the porcelain veneer to the tooth to replace the tooth’s original enamel. Porcelain veneers are beautiful restorations that are very natural looking. They are great restorations that can be used to repair teeth that are chipped or worn down.
Another procedure we offer at Prescott Dental Arts is transitional bonding. This can be used for mock-up or full-mouth rehabilitation. Transitional bonding is referred to as transitional because it allows a patient to transition into more permanent dentistry. Transitional bonding is an important tool used for many cosmetic dental procedures.
