What Is A Dental Crown?

At Prescott Dental Arts, our office provides several restoration options for you. One of the treatments we provide is dental crowns. A dental crown, also known as a cap, covers and supports a tooth that has become damaged or weak. Dental crowns are tooth shaped and cover the whole tooth and restore function and appearance. Not only are crowns strong enough to withstand constant use, they also have cosmetic benefits.

At our Prescott, AZ office we have several crown material options that our patients can choose from to ensure they are happy with their smile. Traditionally crowns were made of gold or porcelain fused to metal. These materials were used because of their strength. However, as dentistry has advanced, crown material has also improved. Patients can now choose to have crowns that are made of all porcelain or ceramic material. These materials are white and translucent and look and feel more like natural teeth.

With no metal, crowns can create a beautiful, natural-looking smile. Of course the natural look of a crown is important, however, functionality and strength are also important. Because crowns are strong and shaped like natural teeth they allow a person to eat all the foods they are used to. Having a crown placed over a damaged tooth is the best way to prevent further damage to the tooth, prevent other teeth from shifting, and preserve oral structure and bite.

When Is A Crown Needed?

Here at Prescott Dental Arts we use dental crowns to restore teeth for a variety of different dental issues. Dental crowns can correct several dental problems including:

  • Cracked teeth – Sometimes cracks in teeth can occur due to unhealthy habits like chewing ice, biting fingernails, opening packages with teeth, or grinding and clenching. When teeth develop cracks they become weak and sensitive. Placing a crown on the tooth adds protection and support as well as alleviates any sensitivity.
  • Broken tooth – Broken teeth differ from cracked teeth because a large portion of the tooth is lost as opposed to the tooth having small fractures. When a tooth is broken it is susceptible to fracturing more and can cause severe pain. A crown will help restore the tooth and keep the remaining portion of the tooth supported.
  • Severely decayed tooth – When a tooth has a lot of decay the tooth structure becomes weak and can easily fracture. Crowns help support the tooth and protect it. Once the decay is removed a tooth may need a build up. Core build up is used to restore the tooth structure to make it a solid foundation for the crown.
  • After a root canal – When a tooth has deep decay that reaches the nerve a root canal is required to save the tooth. After the root canal is completed the tooth requires a core build up and a crown to restore the tooth.
  • Cosmetic imperfections– Cosmetic dental issues such as tooth discoloration, misshapen teeth, or missing teeth can really affect a smile. Dental crowns can improve the appearance of a smile by changing the color, shape, width or length of a tooth.
  • After an implant – When a person loses a tooth an implant can be used to replace that missing tooth. Once the implant is placed a crown is attached to the top and restores the missing tooth.

Dental crowns are a wonderful option for anyone looking to restore teeth that are broken, cracked, decayed or just need a change.
